Acupressure is an alternative medical technique that is often used in combination with acupuncture or reflexology. It is based on the concept of life energy that flows through the "meridians" in the body. Physical pressure on acupuncture points is applied during treatment to clear the blockages in these meridians. The pressure can be applied manually or with different devices. The main application of acupressure is:
Acupressure works by putting pressure on certain points on the body to release qi (energy in the body). The application of pressure requires precision, as about 365 points are located on the main channels, plus there are over 650 separate acupressure points. Like the network of vessels in the circulatory system, each channel has a network of connections.
Different techniques are used to influence qi in the channels. These techniques include toning, spreading and soothing. Weak Qi requires toning. Blocked Qi is released and the overactive Qi is calmed.
The applied pressure is often retained from a few seconds to minutes. Treated points are not processed directly on the skin. Although manipulated points may be sensitive, acupressure should not be painful. Depending on the condition, treatment can be given every other day or several times a day.
