Lateral epicondylitis

Description

Lateral epicondylitis 1

Lateral epicondylitis, also known as "tennis elbow," is the most common overuse-related syndrome affecting the elbow complex. It represents inflammation of the tendons of the extensor musculature of the forearm.

Lateral epicondylitis is classified as an overuse injury and can lead to hyaline degeneration of the tendon's entrapment site. This type of condition is commonly associated with overuse in work and any activity involving wrist extension, pronation and supination. It equally affects both men and women. Although categorized as an inflammatory disease, the inflammatory process is present only in the initial stages. Epicondylitis is a degenerative condition in which scar tissue forms.

Symptoms

The main symptom of lateral epicondylitis is pain, which can be provoked on palpation. The sensation may irradiate upwards and downwards towards the upper arm and forearm respectively, sometimes as far as the third and fourth fingers of the hand. In addition, patients complain of weakness in the grip, especially when the elbow joint is extended. Occasionally, redness and swelling are seen in the area.
