Choosing a comfortable and suitable pillow that does not make you feel stiff in the morning is a difficult task. We at Okto will give you some tips on how to choose the right pillow for you.
For side sleepers - your pillow should be able to fill the space between your ear and shoulder without going under your shoulder and lifting it. Your neck should remain neutral i.e. no head tilts towards either shoulder.
For back sleepers - if this position is most comfortable for you, sleeping without a pillow best helps you maintain a neutral neck position. However, this option is extremely uncomfortable and takes time for a person to get used to. If you wish to use a pillow while sleeping in this position, make sure that it is not too high as your neck will be in a position of increased flexion, putting extra strain on the muscles and joints in this area. It is also important to position the pillow in such a way that it is under your head, not under your shoulders.
For stomach sleepers - the only positive of sleeping on your stomach is that it can reduce snoring. If you sleep on your stomach and your head is turned in either direction, it puts a lot of stress on your neck muscles and ligaments. This is not advisable especially if you complain of neck pain.
If you are convinced that the pain you are experiencing is due to an inappropriate pillow, it is advisable to change it , to see if the complaints will respond. If your complaints are severe and uncomfortable or you need advice, you can contact one of our specialists. At Okto we have successfully dealt with neck problems.
