Article Chronic Neck Pain

When you have chronic neck pain you feel:

  • Stiff neck that makes turning the head difficult
  • Sharp or stabbing pain in one spot
  • Soreness or tenderness in a general area
  • Pain that radiates down into the shoulders, arms, or fingers; or radiates up into the head

Physical Exam of Patient: Observation. Palpation. Range of motion test.

Diagnostic Testing: X-ray. CT scan. Myelogram. MRI scan. Electrodiagnostic testing.

Nonsurgical Medical Care for Neck Pain: Physical therapy. Most treatment programs usually include some form of physical therapy to improve neck strength and flexibility. The physical therapy program’s structure and length will vary depending on the specific diagnosis and situation. In the beginning, the person will typically have multiple sessions per week with a trained physical therapist, and then in time will progress to performing the prescribed exercises at home.
